CAS is an opportunity for students to CREATE KNOWLEDGE
through the tranformation of EXPERIENCE.

This component of the IB programme is designed to help students learn through doing. Students learn to reflect on their activities so that they can better develop their sense of self and their role in their community.    Over the two years of the diploma programme students engage in approximately 150 hours of activities that are creative, action oriented, or in service to others. Many students use activities they are already involved in, such as boy scouts or ballet classes. Each cohort of Diploma candidates will work on an annual project that has global significance. CAS is discussed more in-depth at the New Candidate Orientation meeting in the Fall.

Documenting CAS
Starting with the class of 2013 CAS reflections and evidence will be done on individual CAS BLOGS. A students blog will include the following:

REFLECTIONS
Candidates must have a reflection for each CAS activity that includes the following questions:
  • What did you plan to do?
  • What did you actually do?
  • What did you learn about others?
  • What did you learn about yourself?
  • Describe how you achieved one (or more) of the CAS GOALS with this project. (see list below)
CAS GOALS
All projects should meet one or more of the CAS goals:
  • Will this help me understand my own strengths and limitations?
  • Is this a new challenge for me?
  • Will this require me to be a more active member of my community?
  • Will I take on new responsibilities?
  • Will I have to collaborate with other people?
  • Will I have to initiate an activity?
  • Will I be dealing with an issue of global importance?
  • Will I be developing new skills?

EVIDENCE
As part of each CAS activity, students must keep evidence of their participation. Whenever possible a picture uploaded to the student's blog is preferable.  When this is not possible there are other options:
  • Links to webpages
  • Business cards from project leaders
  • Planning documents from a project
  • Emails regarding project planning or progress
