The vision of the Right Brain Initiative is to achieve a measurable impact on learning by integrating the community's arts and cultural resources into the education of every K-8 student in the region's school districts.
The Right Brain Initiative is a collaboration among artists, educators, parents, local governments, business leaders, and donors who are working to achieve this vision in an equitable, systemic, and sustainable way.
Beginning in 2009, artists joined teachers in connecting the arts across the curriculum for nearly 10,000 children in 20 pilot schools across 4 districts - Gresham-Barlow, Hillsboro, North Clackamas, and Portland. Partnering artists and arts organizations were selected through an application and panel review process, offering schools a range of art forms, genres, and cultural experiences from which to choose. Additional artists and new schools will be added annually until the program reaches full scale in all tri-county school districts.
The Right Brain Initiative supports a holistic approach to learning, which provides teachers with new strategies to make connections among all subjects and gives students arts-rich experiences, allowing them to see and understand the world in new ways.
