Notes From the Nurse...
I'm Nancy Carlisle, the school nurse. I serve Milwaukie Elementary/El Puente, Lot Whitcomb, Lewelling, and Linwood/Sojourner. I work part time, three days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. All of the school nurses in the district want to be a resource for families. Please let us know if we can be of assistance with locating community resources, communicating health information or other health concerns.
PREVENTION is key to staying healthy.
1) Cover your cough & sneeze.
2) Wash your hands often.
3) Stay home when you are sick so you don't spread germs.
4) Get the flu vaccines as they become available.
Pertussis is also known as "whopping cough" because of the sound after a coughing spasm. This serious disease has increased in the past few years. It is part of the childhood mandatory immunization schedule, along with tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox) , and hepatitis A & B. Children age 10 and up need to get the Tdap vaccine to help continue the immunity. To find out more about pertussis and how to prevent this disease, check out the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/about/signs-symptoms.html.
Vision screening is done for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students each year, typically in the fall and parents are contacted if a professional exam is recommended for your child. Please let me know if you need help with a doctor visit or glasses.
For dental needs, contact the Dental Coordinator, Angela, at 503-353-5663 ext 33781.
