Welcome to View Acres.    The next few paragraphes will help answer questions you may have about the View Acres Library.

As the Media Technology Assistant or Librarian, I work with every student.  Every class comes to the library once a week to check out books.  All students can check out two books (Kindergarten starts with one).  I encourage students to make one of their choices a book they can read start to finish.  Books are to be turned in to the class library tub early on their library day so the books can be put out for choosing again before their class comes in.  The exception is chapter books that can be renewed and should be carried to the library with them.   Nonfiction books need to be shared and are not renewable unless needed for a project.  Students should come to the library prepared, making sure that no books are left at home, in their desks, or in their backpacks.  Students are welcome to come to the library to get new books as often as necessary.  They just need to check with their teacher that I am free in the library and not working with a class.

This is important.  At View Acres all students do something a little different with their library books; they always return their books to their backpack after reading them at home.  This means they will be bringing them to school everyday.  This prevents them from getting lost, scribbled in by younger siblings, borrowed and not returned by older siblings, chewed on by pets, mixed up with their personal books on their book shelves, washed with the sheets and it helps eliminate some rushing around the morning they have library.  Also they will have their books available to them for silent reading time in the classroom.  They should try to keep their books in their backpack with their homework, and away from food and liquids.

Book Fairs get students excited about reading and help to add books the students want to read.  They create a lot of work to a tight schedule (we continue a full library program) and are a chance to help out once or twice a year.  Volunteers are appreciated to set up, cashier, help out at family night events, pack up and help the fair run smoothly.  All training will be provided.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions at wigginska@nclack.k12.or.us.
