Water Safety Update

September 21, 2016

School Board / Administrators:

We are following up on our communications of June 3, July 25, and August 16, 2016 when we shared the lead in water sampling process, test results, and outlined our action plan to ensure the safety and health of our students, staff and community.

As reported previously, Round 1 test results reported that eight schools had 1 -2 fixtures with actionable levels of lead. The eight schools are Alder Creek Middle School, Bilquist Elementary School, Campbell Campus, Concord (vacant school), Milwaukie High School, Mt. Scott Elementary School, New Urban High School, and Rex Putnam High School.

The district’s action plan to address Round 1 test results for the eight schools has included:

  1. Promptly communicate action plans and test results, and provide all information on the district’s website
  2. Prevent the use of any fixture intended for drinking or cooking until an independent laboratory reports the water’s test results are below the actionable level
  3. Prohibit with signage the use of water for drinking or cooking from any sink fixture not intended for drinking or cooking (e.g. restrooms and science rooms) until an independent laboratory reports the water’s test results are below the actionable level
  4. Replace any fixture that tested above actionable level and then retest the new fixture to ensure it is below the actionable level

Exception: At this time, no work will be conducted at the closed and vacant Concord school

The district hired an independent environmental company and lab to conduct a second round of sampling and testing at the eight buildings listed above. The district recently received the Round 2 test results for these schools. The results are outlined below:

Active Buildings (Alder Creek MS, Bilquist ES, Campbell Campus, Milwaukie HS, Mt. Scott ES, New Urban HS, Putnam HS)

  1. 386 samples were taken at the 7 buildings.
  2. 18 samples tested above the actionable level with fixtures intended for drinking or cooking (e.g. drinking fountains, classroom bubblers, and kitchen sinks used for food preparation).
  3. 83 samples tested above the actionable level at sinks not intended for drinking or cooking. (e.g. restrooms and science room sinks).

Inactive Buildings (Concord, New Urban HS Annex)

  1. 72 samples were taken at the 2 buildings.
  2. 6 samples tested above the actionable level with fixtures intended for drinking or cooking (e.g. drinking fountains, classroom bubblers, and kitchen sinks used for food preparation).
  1. 12 samples tested above the actionable level at sinks not intended for drinking or cooking. (e.g. restrooms and science room sinks).

The results for the individual schools can be found at: www.nclack.k12.or.us/water

The district’s action plan to address Round 2 test results is outlined below:

  1. Promptly communicate action plans and test results, and provide all information on the district’s website
  2. Continue to prevent the use of any fixture intended for drinking or cooking until an independent laboratory reports the water’s test results are below the actionable level
  3. Continue to prohibit with signage the use of water for drinking or cooking from any sink fixture not intended for drinking or cooking (e.g. restrooms and science rooms) until an independent laboratory reports the water’s test results are below the actionable level
  4. Replace any fixture that tested above actionable level and then retest the new fixture to ensure it is below the actionable level

Exception: At this time, no work will be conducted at the closed and vacant Concord school.
