Inspirational New Urban Online Artist Draws Attention

For some artists, putting pen to paper helps them feel calm and a sense of relaxation. For others, brush strokes across a canvas help convey feelings that otherwise can't be put into words. Then there’s New Urban Online student Rania Sheikh Mosa, who uses acrylics, chalk, and watercolors to not only draw attention to the natural beauty around her…but also to her own beautiful story about persevering through a challenge no child should ever have to endure.

“I love art because it also helps me to express my feelings, emotions, and thoughts that I do not tell others about,” said the 19-year-old artist.

Thankfully for art lovers, those once private thoughts are now on full display at the Lakewood Center of the Arts in Lake Oswego throughout November, as Sheikh Mosa is currently honored as the monthly featured artist in the Center’s Youth Gallery.

“Since I was a kid, I always enjoyed doing things like drawing or creating stuff,” said Sheikh Mosa. “When I got sick I had a lot of free time, so I started drawing, and since then I’ve never stopped.”

As a young child, Sheikh Mosa moved to refugee camps in Turkey to escape her war-torn homeland of Syria. But at just eight years old, Sheikh Mosa’s family received devastating news-- their daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, requiring multiple surgeries and a long recovery. Unable to attend formal schooling for months, the aspiring artist decided to use her drawing skills to regain self-confidence and overcome feelings of loneliness.

“I’m so excited to see people’s reactions to my art, and I would like to hear some advice as well,” said the student honoree.

The excitement is shared by one of Sheikh Mosa’s biggest fans— New Urban Online's advisor Alison Esgate, who proudly attended the “meet the artist” reception for her student earlier in the month. “I loved being able to see Rania’s art that she’s worked so hard to create. We are all so proud of her!”

Sheikh Mosa has every reason to feel proud of herself too. As a cancer survivor whose work is now featured in a public art gallery, the inspirational teenager has three pieces of advice for any student facing life challenges: “Don’t lose hope, always believe in yourself, and try your best.”
