Classified Staff Pursuing a Teaching License

Take the Next Step Toward Licensure

If you’re a classified staff member ready to pursue your teaching license, this page
will guide you through the steps and resources available to help you succeed.

Why Pursue a Teaching License?

  • Make an even greater impact on students by stepping into a classroom teaching role and helping shape their learning and growth.
  • Build on the experience you already have working in schools, with students, and as part of an educational community.
  • Expand your career opportunities by qualifying for licensed teaching positions and opening the door to future professional growth.
  • Increase your earning potential as you transition from a classified position into a licensed educator role.
  • Bring your unique perspective to the classroom and use your existing skills, relationships, and experiences to become the kind of teacher students need.

License Requirement:

To become a teacher in Oregon, you must obtain a license through the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC). The goal is to obtain a Preliminary Teaching License, which “is issued to new teachers who have completed a Commission-approved teacher preparation program.”

It’s important to note that TSPC only approves teacher preparation programs that are listed on their official “Approved Oregon Programs” list. You can access this list here:
