Specialized Roles in Education

Expand Your Impact Beyond the Classroom

Many educators choose to grow their careers by transitioning into specialized roles that support students in different ways. These roles may include School Counselor, School Psychologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, School Social Worker, or other specialized student services positions.

This page is designed to help current educators explore the pathways, degree requirements, and licensure steps needed to move into these roles.

Before You Get Started

Before exploring programs, take time to reflect on your long-term career goals and the requirements of your desired role.

Ask yourself:

  • What specialized role am I interested in pursuing?
  • Do I need a master’s or doctoral degree for this role?
  • What are the licensure or certification requirements in Oregon?
  • Am I prepared for graduate-level coursework and field experiences?
  • How does this role align with my strengths and interests?

Tip: Most specialized education roles require completion of a graduate program that includes both coursework and supervised clinical or field experience.

Next Steps:

Ready to Move Into a Specialized Role?
